Born and raised in East Berlin, the comic artist and author Mawil reports back just in time for the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. “Kinderland” (Children’s Land”) is 300-pages thick and – other than most of his former works – not autobiographical, but strongly inspired by his own childhood. The protagonist Mirco Watzke, who is busy with the rowdies of the Free German Youth, a new classmate, and last but not least, table tennis, is as much a “chicken” as Markus Witzel used to be, according to Mawil himself. The exhibition in the basement of the Erlangen Ultra Comic shop is designed by Mawil himself, and displays original drawings and sketches for his biggest project yet. However, not only the drawings vault the audience 25 years back, but a self-built table tennis table, a mural painting, and a reading corner also help to get lost in the “children’s land”.
Free admission!
Reception in the exhibition: Friday, 20 June, 3pm
Daily autograph session and guided tour through the exhibition with Mawil: 19 – 22 June, respectively at 3pm and 4pm
